Microloc Aftercare & Maintenance

After Service Care Education | Nice Locs | Atlanta

What You Just Received

You received Microlocs, a high-density loc system created with small, intentional sectioning and maintained through precise root control (interloc or approved method).

Because of their size and number, microlocs are more sensitive to timing, tension, products, and manipulation than traditional locs. Healthy microlocs depend on consistency and restraint.

The First 72 Hours

During the first 72 hours after your service:

  • Avoid moisture (water, steam, sweat, rain)

  • Do not retighten, twist, roll, or manipulate roots

  • Avoid tight styles or repeated pulling

  • Sleep with a satin or silk scarf, bonnet, or pillowcase

This allows the roots and grid to settle without stress.

If You Have Starter Microlocs (Critical Formation Phase: First 2–4 Weeks)

Starter microlocs are not locked yet, even if they look neat.

  • Do not retighten between appointments

  • Avoid excessive separation or “checking” roots

  • Keep styles loose and low-tension

  • Expect frizz and fuzz — this is normal

Early over-retightening is a leading cause of thinning and grid distortion.

If You Have Mature Microlocs

Once established, microlocs still require precision care.

  • Follow your stylist’s retightening schedule exactly

  • Avoid pulling locs into tight, repeated styles

  • Rotate styling direction to reduce stress

  • Protect hair during sleep and rest

Maintenance keeps microlocs healthy; over-maintenance damages them.

Daily Care

Between appointments:

  • Keep hands out of your locs

  • Avoid rubbing or rolling the roots

  • Separate only if instructed

  • Be mindful of friction from hats, scarves, or collars

Microlocs respond best to minimal interference.

Cleansing & Moisture

  • Shampoo only when approved or scheduled by Nice Locs

  • Cleanse the scalp with gentle pressure

  • Avoid scrubbing or twisting the roots

  • Rinse thoroughly to prevent residue between locs

  • Ensure hair dries completely after washing

  • Use light hydration only (mists or sprays)

  • Avoid oils, creams, butters, or waxes

Microlocs trap buildup quickly; heavy products cause merging and weakening.

What to Avoid

  • Retightening at home

  • Frequent re-interlocking

  • Heavy oils at the root

  • Tight ponytails, buns, or updos

  • Allowing another stylist to adjust your grid

Improper timing or direction causes holes, thinning, and long-term damage.

What’s Normal

The following are expected with microlocs:

  • Early frizz and fuzz

  • Visible grid lines

  • Slight swelling at the root

  • Natural movement as hair grows

Neat does not mean stiff. Frizz does not mean failure.

What’s NOT Normal

Contact Nice Locs if you experience:

  • Persistent pain or soreness beyond 48 hours

  • Redness, irritation, or sensitivity

  • Visible thinning or weak spots

  • Holes, gaps, or distorted grid sections

  • Locs merging unexpectedly

Do not attempt to correct these issues yourself.

When to Book Again

Most microloc clients return every 6–8 weeks, depending on:

  • Hair density and growth rate

  • Lifestyle and tension exposure

  • Stage of loc maturity

Your stylist will determine the safest schedule for your hair.
